A sad day for those who love shopping in store at the 22 stores named to close in today’s news.

Debenhams was co-founded in the eighteenth century as a single store in London and grew to 178 stores across the UK. Almost a third of these sites are to close over the next three years.

Today Debenhams names the 22 stores that will be closing around Christmas 2019:

Altrincham

Ashford

Birmingham Fort

Canterbury

Chatham

Eastbourne

Folkestone

Great Yarmouth

Guildford

Kirkcaldy

Orpington

Slough

Southport

Southsea

Staines

Stockton-on-Tees

Walton-on-Thames

Wandsworth

Welwyn Garden City

Wimbledon

Witney

Wolverhampton

Industry experts are saying that Debenhams went wrong when they expanded the number of stores in the 2000s when customers were switching to shopping online.

It is well known that high street shopping is steadily decreasing, and this is being demonstrated by the big names closing stores.

One of the main causes behind this is the turn to online shopping.

Take for instance today Debenhams online is offering:

Up to half price on beauty and fragrance

40% off selected brands

50% off men’s wear

50% off woman’s wear

Discounted electricals, home and fragrance

So, it’s not all bad news, perhaps in the midst of your local store closing you’ll be able to find some bargains online.
